Material Dependencies and the Geopolitics of the Green Transition

Association for International Affairs (AMO) is organising a one day special event - the aim of which is to":

  • Understanding the unfolding geopolitics of the green transition by focusing on the EU’s existing and projected material dependencies and their possible mitigation.

  • Developing a broader understanding of the issue in the context of resilience, sovereignty and climate security.

  • Rethinking the extractivist logic of the dominant green strategies and policies.

  • Opening a space for a more nuanced policy discussion by bringing together Czech and international experts and policymakers.

Our CEO will join one of the discussions - Aligning climate security with Europe’s economic security objectives

Speakers:

Mats Braun, Director of the Institute of International Relations Prague

Olivia Lazard, Research Fellow at Carnegie Europe

Linda Zeilina-Cross, Founder and CEO of the International Sustainable Finance Centre

Moderation:

Ondřej Kolínský, AMO

Recent geopolitical developments have cast doubt over the complementarity between the EU’s economic and climate security objectives. What key tensions and trade-offs are there between security, justice and competi- tiveness? Practically, what would be the avenues to strengthen the coherence of EU climate diplomacy with its development cooperation or trade policies, having the relevant strategic documents in mind? And what role do raw materials and their value chains play in these considerations?

Wind Europe 2024 Annual Event in Bilbao

2024 promises to be a defining year for European politics. The EU elections are coming up in June. And a new Commission takes office in November. Wind energy will come under huge scrutiny as Governments weigh up the costs of the energy transition.

At this year’s conference, the focus is on driving home the value of wind – and what it represents for Europeans at home and abroad. Our conference will look at the net benefits of wind for five focus areas:

  • Energy security

  • Jobs

  • Communities

Introducing the first of its kind, RICS World Built Environment Forum Europe is a unique opportunity for our regional members and those who have an interest in the built and natural environments to gather, collaborate and network in Venice. Directly affected by climate change (rising sea levels) and social challenges (mass tourism), the city of Venice, as well as the wider public and private sectors recognise the need to change, and to do so at pace.

Overview

The location, a renovation of heritage-built environment to enhance sustainability

To realise this vision, WBEF Europe will take place at the Procuratie Vecchie, a historical landmark in Piazza San Marco, where we will convene sector leaders from different backgrounds to advance discussions of critical importance and ultimately shape the future of the profession and that of the built and natural environments.

The Procuratie Vecchie is an example of optimal renovation of heritage-built environment to enhance sustainability. The restoration of the Procuratie Vecchie was managed by Generali Real Estate on the basis of a project commissioned to David Chipperfield Architects Milan, selected following an international competition to renovate and enhance the prestigious building while respecting its unique historical and cultural heritage. Today, the Procuratie is the new home of The Human Safety Net.

2 half days to analyse how to reach a sustainable, resilient, and prosperous continent

Over 2 half days, participants will build a picture of the effective decarbonisation of the European built environment and sustainable investment practices amidst a global economic downturn that is impacting industry practice and notions of business-as-usual. At the heart of it, the ESG agenda will be a constant feature throughout the event. To conclude, we will revise what has been discussed across the different sessions and state the next steps to achieve a sustainable, resilient, and prosperous continent.

Will ESG disclosure help us reach the objectives of the Paris Agreement?

The next debate in our #FBFDiscuss! series will feature Linda Zeilina (International Sustainable Finance Centre) as a proponent and Florian Berg (MIT Sloan School of Management) as an opponent to discuss the role of ESG disclosure in achieving the Paris Agreement's objectives.

Ever since the establishment of a Task Force on Climate-Related Financial Disclosures in 2015 by the Financial Stability Board (FSB), disclosure has been a key pillar of public policies to promote the development of sustainable finance as well as better understanding of climate related financial risks globally. While experts generally agree that disclosure rules will add value to support the transition to net zero, opinions differ on how useful ESG disclosures will be to reach the objectives of the Paris Agreement. This dynamic seminar, part of #FBFDiscuss, will bring contrarian arguments to the fore to help us look at both sides of this conversation.

Linda Zeilina (International Sustainable Finance Centre) and Florian Berg (MIT Sloan School of Management) will debate the issues at hand in an Oxford-style debate, moderated by Pierre Schlosser, and with the audience able to weigh in via live polls and a Q&A session.

Registration is open to all, and free of charge.
